Personal Development

Growing Mighty Oaks

At Oakley CE Combined School, we believe that every child is a precious acorn. Through love, learning and our Christian ethos, we nurture each child to grow into a mighty oak; deeply rooted in our values of love, honesty and respect, strong in character, confident in who they are and ready to flourish in an ever-changing world.

Personal Development is at the heart of everything we do. It is not an additional part of school life; it is woven through our curriculum as part of our curriculum memory makers, collective worship, enrichment opportunities, leadership roles and daily interactions. We aim to equip every child with the knowledge, skills, experiences and confidence they need to thrive both now and in the future.

Alongside academic success, we want our pupils to become compassionate, resilient and responsible citizens who understand the world around them and have the confidence to make a positive difference within it.

Our Personal Development Vision

We want all pupils to:

  • Develop positive physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
  • Build healthy, respectful and safe relationships.
  • Grow in confidence, resilience and independence.
  • Embrace challenge and take appropriate risks.
  • Understand and demonstrate British Values alongside our Christian values of love, honesty and respect.
  • Celebrate diversity and respect people from all backgrounds, faiths and cultures.
  • Stay safe both online and offline.
  • Contribute positively to their community through service and leadership.
  • Develop teamwork, communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience awe, wonder and joy through a rich range of opportunities.
  • Aspire to achieve their full potential and make a positive difference in the world around them.

How We Bring Personal Development to Life

Pupil Personal Passport

Our Pupil Personal Passport ensures that every child experiences a carefully planned range of enrichment opportunities throughout their time at Oakley. From memorable visits and workshops to cultural events and community projects, every pupil is entitled to experiences that broaden horizons, raise aspirations and create lasting memories. We are committed to ensuring that all children, regardless of background, develop the cultural capital needed to succeed in modern Britain.

Leadership Opportunities

We believe every child has the potential to lead and make a difference.

Through roles such as School Councillors, Digital Leaders, Wellbeing Ambassadors, Worship Leaders and Eco Leaders, pupils learn how to represent others, take responsibility, work collaboratively and contribute positively to school life. These opportunities help children develop confidence, character and a sense of service to others.

Forest School

Our Forest School programme enables children to learn, explore and grow through meaningful outdoor experiences. Pupils develop resilience, confidence, creativity and problem-solving skills while learning to work collaboratively and manage risk safely.

Forest School provides opportunities for children to connect with nature, build independence and experience awe and wonder in the world around them, supporting their spiritual, social and emotional development.

PSHE and Life Skills

Our PSHE curriculum is built around three key themes:

  • Relationships
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Living in the Wider World

Through carefully sequenced learning, pupils develop the knowledge and skills needed to stay safe, understand themselves and others, make informed choices and prepare confidently for life beyond primary school.

Wider World Sessions

Our Wider World Sessions bring learning to life by welcoming members of the local and wider community into school to share their professions, hobbies, heritage, experiences and personal journeys.

These meaningful encounters help pupils understand the diverse world in which they live, challenge stereotypes and raise aspirations. By meeting people from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and careers, children gain a deeper appreciation of different life experiences and begin to see the many opportunities available to them in the future.

Rooted in our Christian vision, these sessions encourage pupils to recognise the dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual whilst developing curiosity, empathy and respect.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

At Oakley, we celebrate diversity and actively promote inclusion in all aspects of school life. Through our curriculum, collective worship and wider experiences, pupils learn about different cultures, faiths, identities and perspectives.

We encourage children to challenge stereotypes, value difference and demonstrate respect and understanding towards others, preparing them to thrive in a diverse society.

Wellbeing and Mental Health

Supporting children's wellbeing is a key priority.

Our approach includes:

  • The Zones of Regulation
  • Access to a trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA)
  • Drawing and Talking Therapy
  • Classroom sensory stations
  • Sensory circuits
  • Wellbeing Ambassadors
  • Our "10 Ways to Good Wellbeing" programme
  • Our Growth-Mindset programme

These approaches help children develop emotional literacy, self-awareness, self-regulation and positive mental health habits that support them throughout their lives.

Spiritual Development

Our Christian vision creates opportunities for every child to reflect, explore meaning and develop a sense of belonging.

Using our Windows, Mirrors and Doors approach, pupils are encouraged to:

  • Look outwards and learn about the world around them.
  • Reflect on their own thoughts, beliefs and experiences.
  • Consider how they can respond and make a positive difference.

Collective worship provides opportunities for reflection, prayer, celebration and discussion. Through singing worship, pupils experience and appreciate music from different cultures and traditions, while our weekly Picture News worships encourage children to explore current affairs, British Values and issues affecting the wider world.

Keeping Children Safe

We are committed to helping children stay safe and make informed choices.

Pupils benefit from a wide range of safeguarding and personal safety experiences, including:

  • NSPCC assemblies and workshops
  • Visits from the Police, Fire Service and healthcare professionals
  • Water safety education
  • Road safety awareness
  • Online safety education
  • Age-appropriate learning around personal safety and healthy relationships

These opportunities help children understand risks, build confidence and know where to turn for support when needed.

Music, Arts, Culture and Sport

We believe every child should have opportunities to discover their talents and shine.

Pupils regularly participate in:

  • School productions and performances
  • Class-led collective worships
  • Poetry slams and public speaking events
  • Young Voices, including performances at the Royal Albert Hall
  • Sporting festivals, competitions and tournaments
  • Educational visits that include adventurous and sporting activities
  • Our annual Zone Day, where children experience a range of new sports and activities
  • A wide variety of clubs and enrichment opportunities
  • Creative homework projects showcased in our termly Homework Galleries
  • Instrumental tuition through Buckinghamshire Music Trust, including drum lessons

These experiences help children develop confidence, teamwork, perseverance and creativity while celebrating their individual strengths and talents.

Promoting a Love of Reading

Our purposefully designed school library provides a welcoming and inspiring environment where children can develop a lifelong love of reading.

Through high-quality texts, engaging reading events and opportunities to explore a wide range of genres and authors, we nurture curiosity, imagination and a love of learning.

Community Engagement

Serving others is an important part of life at Oakley.

Our pupils play an active role in supporting both the school and wider community. Through charity fundraising, community projects and leadership opportunities, children learn the importance of compassion, responsibility and service.

The children contribute and represent the school at local celebrations and events, such as performing  at the Oakley Big Weekender

One particularly special tradition is our annual community Christmas initiative, where pupils help organise and deliver gifts to vulnerable members of our village community, demonstrating our values of love, kindness and respect in action.

Our Aim

Ultimately, we want every child to leave Oakley as a Mighty Oak: rooted in strong Christian values, respectful of others, confident in who they are, ambitious for their future and equipped to flourish in their communities and the wider world.

Through our rich and ambitious Personal Development offer, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow, contribute and thrive.
