What does the Bible have to say about prejudice and how we respond to it?  How can we bring about change?  Watch the parable of 'The Good Samaritan': this is one of Jesus's stories.   It is about a man who is attacked and another man, a Samaritan, who helped him.  It is important to know that at the time of the telling of this story, Samaritans were generally looked down upon and despised.   (You will find the story by clicking on the link which is at the end of the following powerpoint.)

Then think about these questions:

  • Who is our neighbour?
  • Is a person good or bad because of his or her creed or colour?
  • Are people good or bad because of their status or religious position?
  • How will the experience of the injured man in this story change him?  Will it change him, do you think?

Now imagine you are the man who was injured and helped, not by a member of your own people, or even by a priest, but by a Samaritan, a man who is generally looked down by you and your people.  Write a letter to a friend or family member explaining what happened and how it has made you feel about Samaritans and other people who are not the same as you.
